SECURITY & FOREIGN AFFAIRS: RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY COMMENTS THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY KARABAKH RESOLUTION

Date: 03-14-2008
Source: NKR MFA Press Service
Author:

On March 14, the UN General Assembly voted for the Resolution “On the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan" initiated by Baku (39 delegations voted for, 7- against, 100-abstained). The OSCE MG co-chair countries on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement (which, besides Russia, includes the USA and France) voted against this draft resolution.

In the joint statement on the motives of the voting they explained their position with the fact that this step of the Azeri side was one-sided, untimely and counter-productive.

This stance has repeatedly and on different levels been brought to General Assembly’s notice. Particularly, the resolution draft involves only some of the basic principles of the settlement, which correspond merely to the Azeri interests, without mentioning, for instance, the determination of the Nagorno-Karabakh’s final legal status by conducting a plebiscite among its population for free and true will. Such an approach has made the draft unacceptable for the Armenian side and worsened the prospects of soon resumption of the Armenian-Azeri top-level negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement after Armenia’s new president assumes his office.

From its part, Russia together with the USA and France, is ready to continue an active mediation of the MG co-chairs to conclude the coordination of the basic principles of the Karabakh conflict settlement, which will allow to restore stability and peace in this Transcaucasian region.
