Naira Melkoumian

Naira Melkoumian served as NKR Foreign Minister in 1997-2002. Prior to that she served as the NKR Permanent Representative in Armenia. She was conferred the diplomatic rank of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in 1999.

From 1990 to 1995, Melkoumian worked in the Supreme Council, Presidential Administration and Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Armenia. She went on to serve as deputy chief of mission at the NKR Permanent Mission in Armenia from 1995-1997.

Minister Melkoumian has directly participated in negotiations over the Nagorno Karabagh conflict in the framework of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group.

Melkoumian visited the United States in 1998, 1999 and 2000, where she held meetings with U.S. officials, Members of Congress and the Armenian-American community. She has addressed a number of leading policy think tanks and other organizations in the U.S.

Naira Melkoumian is a graduate of the Yerevan State University's Department of Philology. She later earned a Ph.D. in philology from the Yerevan State University.

Mrs. Melkoumian is married and has a daughter.
